Note: I have no affiliation, paid or otherwise, with any of the companies listed. The products are used only as examples of types of lights. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter. Soon it will be dark when it’s time to bike to work or back home. Instead of quitting riding, why not get some lights? Or why not ride at night? There’s less traffic, it’s quieter, and a ride you’ve done a thousand times is suddenly new and interesting again.

This day was supposed to be about 52 miles, and would have been if we had been able to find the campsite–note that I did not say campground… but campsite. We set up our tents in a cow pasture, complete with cow patties every three feet… We left Pinedale, John sitting on the corner with a final cup of real coffee. The first 30 miles was a cinch–on pavement. We had some ups and downs, but no serious climbs until the end of the day (and not on pavement!).

It was 31 degrees this morning when we set out from Jackson. First stop: the grocery store where Steve, Dianne and I shopped for supper, breakfast and lunch tonight and tomorrow and Eli and Brian shopped for Tuesday night/Wednesday’s meals. Our budget is $180 per day for food. We were in there an hour but came in under budget. Very nice. I dressed for a 60 degree day as predicted, but it did not warm up until we reached the campground… I was a bit chilly all day.

After a very early awakening, I was loaded and in the car with Bill at the wheel at 6 AM. We arrived at the airport by 6:30, kiss goodbye, super fast checkin due to checking bags and printing boarding passes on line yesterday… got through security and found that my plane was delayed… supposed to leave at 8:33, now expected to depart at 9:47. Uh-oh. Not good news for the connecting flight in Denver… I called Dianne and left a message telling her I was going to be late.

Here’s my belated report on the Cycle Washington trip Tricia and I took in July. Executive summary: Wow, and double wow. The report: We drove to Ashland, Oregon, intending to camp. We ended up at Jackson’s Wellsprings , a funky campground with hippies and, of course, hot springs. It was much nicer, and a good deal more fun and relaxing, than we expected. The next morning we took our bikes on a 30 mile jaunt through the nearby hills, soaked in the springs, packed our gear and headed to Salem.

After two days of hanging out with Bikergo founder Steven Ascher, and riding around Marin, and enjoying breakfast one day at the Half day Cafe and the next at Comforts in San Anselmo, and strolling through Biketoberfest in Fairfax with the bikes in tow as people ogled them…After two days of sharing the bikes with hundreds of people from the casual passerby to the ones who gave the bike seat a squeeze to the men, women, and children who took one for a test spin…well (*drum roll please!) I now have a Bikergo to call my very own andI have learned a few things!1) My love affair with this bike is NOT a passing infatuation–this IS true love! 2) This bike really is phenomenol.

Using a bicycle as basic transportation can have a dramatic effect on one’s carbon footprint, or, rather, one’s carbon trace 2. Bicycles can play a role in connecting you with your community in a way that a car cannot.

Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook by Nancy Clark, MS, RD Human Kinetics, 2008 461 pages $19.95 Okay, I’m putting it out there, I’m no athlete. Not by a stretch, a jump, or even a jog. I consider myself lucky if I can walk briskly in heels to catch a bus. However since I embarked on this current fitness obsession, I’ve noticed my energy level has shot up considerably and I’m stepping up my workouts by several notches. With that in mind, I know that I’ll need to fuel my body so I can workout efficiently.

Washington state bicycle advocates are pushing for a law to make it illegal for a motorist to seriously injure or kill a vulnerable roadway user — such as a bike rider — in a crash caused by ordinary negligence. All too often, motorists receive mere traffic tickets and don’t even have to appear in court when their inattentive driving results in a bicyclist’s or pedestrian’s death. The Cascade Bicycle Club, among others, is sponsoring a Traffic Justice Summit from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
