The League of American Bicyclists named 15 more cities to its Bicycle-Friendly Community list this week, bringing the grand total to 124. While cities named to the list over the past 14 years are predominantly from western states, the League trumpeted the fact that 10 of the 15 newest communities came from midwestern or eastern states. The addition of the new communities means that 35 million of us live in Bicycle-Friendly Communities.

If you have been following this blog, you know that I have been involved in local bicycle advocacy issues here in Greenville, SC for a while. I was previously the advocacy chairperson for the Greenville Spinners bicycle club and during much of that period I had another blog, Bike Greenville , which covered local cycling issues. More recently, I have served as a member of Bikeville , a group of City employees and concerned citizens who were working toward League of American Bicyclists “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation for Greenville.

The following is a bicycle commuting video produced by students working with Brad Mitchell in the MSU Web & New Media office downtown. The STAR Team of Ozark Greenways wants to talk to students interested in active transportation issues. If you’re a college student in Springfield reading this weblog, leave a comment or contact me directly if you’d like to get involved. I’ll be leaving in a few minutes for the  bicycle advocacy workshop in Little Rock sponsored by the Alliance for Biking & Walking . Several of us from the STAR Team (yes, the thing we were recently calling the START committee that used to be the Sustainable Transportation Committee of Ozark Greenways) are going and taking bicycles. I’ll be reporting from the from the workshop if I find an internet connection.
